Brainsqueezers - Week 4

Welcome back if you saw last week's page (you can click through to it here) If you've been trying to solve last week's riddle, some clues and solutions are below!

While schools are shut, I will put up lots of resources each week to get kids thinking and talking with their parents on this page, or with each other and teachers for those still in school.

The resources will change every Friday. Games, questions, stories, riddles. Solutions to riddles will follow the next week.

Normally I work with schools, and you can get the same free bulletin as the teachers here: free P4C resources.

This week, as it's holidays in the UK, I'm having a holiday too and pointing you to some brilliant content from other providers. But first, some opportunities for online philosophy for both children and adults.

Online Sessions: Philosophy, Improv and Debating

Our sister organisation GIFT, has been running monthly online Philosophy Wranglers online seminars for the last two years. With the surge in demand, we are now running them weekly.

We've also added DEBATE Wranglers. We’ll debate questions from the just-for-fun to the serious, sometimes in pairs, sometimes as a whole group, and with some Argumentag Wrestling in which teams can pit their wits against one another. The vibe is a bit more competitive than in a philosophy seminar, but it’s a playful sort of competition – no harrumphing.

Then there's IMPROV Wranglers for those who enjoy a bit of acting and would like to share with others the  joy of making stuff up, playing creative games, storytelling and generally having fun in a broadly dramatic way.

Lastly, because the kids shouldn't have all the fun to themselves, we are now running weekly PHilosophy Wranglers LATE sessions for adults. Next one: Weds 15th April - The Veil of Ignorance - imagine yourself outside of time, setting the rules for a fair society. The twist is, you don't know who you are going to be. You'll get a ticket for the Lottery of Life on your way in, and only at the end when you have organised the world as you see fit will you find out who you are going to be, and whether you are a winner or a loser by your decisions.

Little Rainbow Academy Ireland

This week, I'd like to point you to the videos produced by Lukasz Krzywon. Lots of parents are trying to combine work with childcare at the moment, and he's enlisted his two sons to help produce some engaging videos, taking some thought-provoking books as his starting point. Episode Three features my favourite children's book characters, Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel.  Go to www.littlerainbowireland.com to see more.

Riddles

Last week's riddle:

You make me

And I make whatever you want

Out of thin air

Clue: We connect people invisibly. If you can see us, you probably can't hear us.

This week's riddle is not one of mine, but it's one of my favourites. It's from the Phillipines, where they like their riddles to be short and smart.

What goes to the river laughing and comes back crying?

This Week's Game - Connections

This one is shown on our YouTube Channel (where all the Spot and Stripe videos are).

Answer to last week's riddle - the words you speak! See you next week.
