This week, a set of tools for managing behaviour during any kind of class discussion. We’ve recorded a short video explaining the ideas we turn to when running demonstration workshops in schools.
In the video we cover:
- How to all but guarantee their buy in from the off
- How to shrink your role without losing any control
- How to get attention back if students are starting to drift
- How to let your classroom set-up do the behaviour management for you
- How to make the dominant students give up space without giving up their voice
…and much more.
It’s only 15 minutes long, but stick us on double speed if you’re short on time!
Video notes
We mention a few resources in the video:
- Here’s the resource on making groupwork work better
- Here’s the “coaching questions” resource that helps make the most of those dominant voices.Â
What’s on in the Philosoverse?
Tom’s on his way back to London to join Jason for next week’s Speaking Summit with Voice21. If you there, do come and say hello to us and nab some free books. Speaking of books, we’ve also been overseeing the publishing of Thinking Moves A-Z in a English-Chinese bilingual format. More to come on this when its released in April!
We have also been speaking to a lot of schools who are booked us for September INSET/philosophy and oracy launch days. There are only a few spots left, so if you’ve got a gap in your INSET schedule and oracy is a high priority, get in touch sharpish.
It’s British Philosophy Fortnight – co-ordinated by the British Philosophy Association – and our colleagues at SAPERE – with whom we run P4C.com, have put together a brilliant set of free resources ready to download now. You’ll spot one of ours in there!
SAPERE are also holding a free webinar to support you do more philosophy. It’s on Wednesday March 26th from 6pm-7pm, and will familiarise you with resources released as part of British Philosophy Fortnight that use ideas that matter and connect to young people.
Your host for this session will be Emma Leeson SAPERE’s Training and Resources Lead and a SAPERE Trainer. These webinars are useful to both new P4Cers and to old hands, especially those who have other colleagues to support.
Best wishes,
Tom and Jason
